WINGS ICT and ELIG join 5TONIC as collaborators for the II Open Call of the 6G-XR European project

December 11th, 2024. 5TONIC, the open research and innovation laboratory for new technologies founded by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks, has signed new collaboration agreements with WINGS ICT Solutions, a Greek SME that provides end-to-end digital solutions specialized in using advanced technologies, and E- Lighthouse Network Solutions (ELIG), a Spanish SME specialized in network analysis, optimization and dimensioning.

The objective of the collaborations is to support, together with 5TONIC’s members such as Telefonica, Capgemini Engineering, Interdigital, and Ericsson and the collaborators Nokia and Intel, the test projects awarded in the II Open Call of the 6G XR project. This call aimed for the deployment and validation of enablers related to the research topics of the Horizon Europe SNS JU Stream B projects such as load balancing and security and trust mechanisms. With this agreement, 5TONIC’s facilities will host the tests and use cases required for the development of the projects.

6G XR is an experimental research infrastructure to enable next-generation XR services and strengthen European leadership in 6G technologies. “Our cutting-edge facilities and technological capabilities in 5TONIC are ready to host use cases for the evolution of tomorrow’s telecommunications ecosystems”, says Cayetano Carbajo, 5TONIC President and Director for Core, Transport and Service Platforms at Global CTIO Telefónica.

In this second Open Call of the 6G XR project, a funding of 600,000 euros was allocated to 10 projects, among which Dynamicon, proposed by ELIG and TrustNet, presented by WINGS ICT Solution, were awarded.

Through the TrustNet, the aim is to create security and trust mechanisms for Edge North Bound interfaces, facilitating secure communication in future multi-domain 6G ecosystems. WINGS ICT Solution, together with 5TONIC lab members and collaborators and their infrastructure, will enhance the Trust Management Framework (TMF), with the integration of complex trust relationships to secure service orchestration in beyond 5G (B5G)/6G environments, leveraging open APIs for experimentation and ensuring reproducibility.

The second awarded project, Dynamicon, seeks to improve service migration and load balancing across the Device/Edge/Cloud continuum using the Edge Computing Optimization Tool (ECOT) to improve the 5TONIC MEC Orchestrator. The purpose of the collaboration at 5TONIC facilities and their members and collaborators, is to validate the interworking of Dynamicon enabler (ECOT) with 5TONIC infrastructure. The integration with the 5TONIC testbed will enable real-time, slice-aware service management and the ECOT will provide detailed edge node data and will utilize NEF APIs to monitor network slice statuses, recommending optimization strategies executed by the 5TONIC MEC Orchestrator.

“We are proud of our participation in projects to strengthen leadership in 6G technologies. The synergy between the members and collaborators represents a great opportunity for the development and testing of both projects, marking new milestones in the advancement of the new technologies”, adds Carlos J. Bernardos, Vice President of 5TONIC and UC3M full professor.

About 5TONIC

5TONIC was initiated by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks Institute with a clear vision to create an open research and innovation ecosystem laboratory in which industry and academia come together to boost technology and business innovative ventures. The laboratory promotes joint project development, joint entrepreneurial ventures, discussion fora, events and conference sites, all in an international environment of the highest impact. 5TONIC serves to show the capabilities and interoperation of pre-commercial 5G equipment, services and applications, by leading global companies in the 5G arena. The laboratory was recently awarded Digital Innovation Hub status by the European Commission.
