The Ministry for Digital Transformation attends a demo of digital twins at 5TONIC lab during their visit to IMDEA Networks

  • Last week, IMDEA Networks welcomed the Head of the Cabinet of the Secretary General for Telecommunications, the Secretary General for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Inspection, the Secretary Of the National Aerospace Safety Council and other senior institutional officials.
  • The visit included a tour of 5TONIC’s laboratory and a demonstration of digital twins by UC3M, with integrated sensing and robotic control by 5G in the lab.

Madrid, January 29, 2025. IMDEA Networks and 5TONIC recently hosted a high-level delegation from the Spanish government, a visit that highlighted the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and government in driving technological innovation. The delegation included representatives from the Ministry for Digital Transformation, ICEX, and the Nuclear Safety Council, notably Juan Santaella, Head of the Cabinet of the Secretary General for Telecommunications, Marta Serrano, Secretary General for Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Inspection, and Juan Antonio de la Torre, Secretary of the National Aerospace Security Council.

The visit featured an exhibition of some of the key initiatives led by IMDEA Networks and 5TONIC in the field of communication networks, including a live demo showcasing the latest advancements and applications of these cutting-edge technologies with a demonstration of how the combination of artificial intelligence and digital twins, connected through 5G networks, makes it possible to develop predictive tools and gestural robotic control systems to optimize production processes

Additionally, the visit provided an opportunity to explore the state-of-the-art facilities where these groundbreaking projects are being developed.

During the tour of the facilities, Dr. Antonio de la Oliva from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, a member of 5TONIC, remarked on the pioneering work of our laboratory to create a global and open environment of collaboration between industry and academia, focused on the development of new technologies such as 5G/6G. In addition, the UC3M also presented a use case developed within a project of the Universalization of Digital Infrastructures for Cohesion Program (UNICO) of the Ministry of Economy.

In addition, they had the opportunity to discuss 5TONIC’s commitment to cutting-edge research and how interdisciplinary collaboration is reflected in its participation in European projects of the European Union’s SNS program, such as Desire 6G, Predict 6G, TrialsNet or 6G XR, as well as in projects of the Spanish UNICO R&D program such as 6G-DATADRIVEN, 6G-EDGEDT, SNS JU projects and ADVANCE-6G.

After the visit to 5TONIC, the tour continued to other IMDEA Networks labs such as: The LiFi lab where data transmission and reception through light is being investigated, the Millimeter Wave lab where advanced platforms for ultra high speed wireless networks are developed for its potential usein 6G and the IoT and Cybersecurity lab where research on digital security and privacy is carried out.

About 5TONIC

5TONIC was initiated by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks Institute with a clear vision to create an open research and innovation ecosystem laboratory in which industry and academia come together to boost technology and business innovative ventures. The laboratory promotes joint project development, joint entrepreneurial ventures, discussion fora, events and conference sites, all in an international environment of the highest impact. 5TONIC serves to show the capabilities and interoperation of pre-commercial 5G equipment, services and applications, by leading global companies in the 5G arena. The laboratory was recently awarded Digital Innovation Hub status by the European Commission.
