5TONIC receives Emilio Viciana, Regional Minister of Education, Science and Universities, Ana Ramírez, Deputy Regional Minister and Ana Cremades, General Director of Research
August 25, 2023 – IMDEA Networks has received the visit of Emilio Viciana, Regional Minister of Education, Science and Universities; Ana Ramírez, Deputy Regional Minister; and Ana Cremades, General Director of Research of the Community of Madrid with the aim of sharing to the activities carried out by the Institute. The visit also included a tour by the premises of 5TONIC, the open research and innovation laboratory founded by Telefónica and IMDEA Networks, where the visitors were given an overview of the activities carried out at the lab by its members and collaborators.
During the visit they were able to see first-hand the open global environment where members of industry and academia work together and carry out specific research and innovation projects related to new technologies. In addition, 5TONIC is currently executing different trials of 5G and 6G technologies implementation for different solutions and industries. As highlighted in the latest White Paper titled “Exploring the future of the network”, presented by 5TONIC, the lab is prepared to incorporate more advanced capabilities and to host the new European 5G Advanced and 6G projects in which the members will participate.
One of the objectives of 5TONIC is to develop these new technologies and provide innovative solutions for different sectors such as tourism, health, education, transport or security, among others. For example, throughout the day, the authorities were able to witness an example of 5G technology applied to autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) from one of the collaborators, ABB, a technology multinational leader in electrification and automation.
It was also discussed the implementation of the SLICES infrastructure founded by the regional government, which addresses solutions for information and communication technologies (ICT) and which has received the prestigious European ESFRI seal.
